Call for Abstracts for the EAF 2018 Professor Alastair Spence Award

The Edinburgh Anaesthesia Festival (EAF) invite delegates to submit an abstract for oral and poster presentation at this year’s EAF, 13-15 August 2018. Sponsored by Tilney Financial Planning Ltd, the oral presentation winner will receive the Professor Alastair Spence Award, complimentary entry to EAF 2019 and a cash prize of £500. There will also be £250 cash prize and complimentary entry to EAF 2019 for the best poster.

EAF 2018 – Abstract Submission

The extended submission deadline has now passed. Thank you for your numerous submissions!

Abstracts should describe research, case reports or quality improvement work carried out by the authors in anaesthesia, intensive care or pain related medicine.

Ensure relevant consent and approval is obtained prior to submitting your abstract.

Abstract to contain:

  • Full name, highest academic qualification, institution, and contact details (including an email address) of corresponding author
  • Full name, highest academic qualification, institution of other authors
  • Title, no more than 20 words
  • The following headings for research or quality improvement work: Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusions
  • For case reports, the following headings should be used: Description, Discussion, Acknowledgements and References.
    Signed written consent must be obtained prior to submission (if patient has passed away, please ensure next of kin has provided consent).
  • A maximum of 1 table or figure
  • The total word count of an abstract may not exceed 400 words. Note: The 400 word count is for the abstract body (title, authors' information, institutions, tables, images and spaces between words will not count towards the 400 word count)

Selection Process

Abstracts will be assessed by a review panel appointed by the EAF Committee. Two abstracts will be selected for oral presentation and will compete for the Professor Alastair Spence Award, £500 cash prize and complimentary entry to the EAF 2019. All other shortlisted abstracts will be invited to present their work as a poster and will compete for the £250 cash prize and complimentary entry to the EAF 2019. Abstract decisions (oral presentation, poster presentation, or rejection) will be notified by 22 June 2018.

Presentation

Oral presentations will be made on the 3rd day of EAF 2018 (15th August 2018). Oral presentations will be 7 minutes long with 3 minutes for questions, in the main auditorium. Poster presenters must be available to discuss their poster with the judging panel. This will be during the intervals of the EAF 2018, further details will be provided.

Prizes

During the EAF 2018, the winner of the oral presentation will be presented with the Professor Alastair Spence Award, a cash prize of £500 and a complimentary pass for EAF 2019. The winner of the poster presentation will win the cash prize of £250 and a complimentary pass for EAF 2019.

Please note:

  • All judging decisions are final, there is no appeals process nor opportunity to discuss decisions made.
  • Poster and oral presenters must be registered to attend the EAF 2018 by 6 July 2018.
