Professor Cor Kalkman

Professor Cor Kalkman Cor Kalkman (1954) is Professor of Anesthesiology at University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands. He currently divides his time between research and clinical neuroanesthesia.

His Ph.D doctoral thesis (1990) was entitled Intraoperative Spinal Cord Function Monitoring with Somatosensory Evoked Potentials: influence of anesthetic and physiological factors and received a ‘Cum Laude’ judicium.

He was Visiting Researcher in Neuroanesthesia Research at the Department of Anesthesiology, University of California, San Diego, USA in 1990-91. Here he developed transcranial stimulation techniques with John C. Drummond, MD, to elicit myogenic motor evoked potentials to monitor spinal cord function during neurosurgical and spinal surgical procedures.

From 1994 to 1999 he was Associate Professor and Vice-Chair at the Department of Anesthesiology, Academic Medical Center Amsterdam. In that period he developed techniques to monitor spinal cord function during thoraco-abdominal aortic surgery and started a preclinical research line on spinal cord ischemia.

Between 1997-2000 he completed a MSc. in Clinical Epidemiology at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences (tutor: Diederick E. Grobbee, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology, University of Utrecht).

In 1999 he was appointed Professor of Anesthesiology at the University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands, where he was Chair of the Division of Perioperative Care and Emergency Medicine until December 2010. He founded the Patient Safety Center of the University Medical Center, Utrecht in April 2007, which he headed until April 2011.

Major research interests are Perioperative physiological monitoring, patient safety/Human Factors, Measuring Quality of Care, cognitive dysfunction following cardiac and non-cardiac surgery, depth of Anesthesia assessment.

Memberships/committees: Dr. Kalkman is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate (WAM). He chaired a committee of the Dutch Hospital Organizations NFU and NVZ on reporting standardized mortality ratio’s and was a member of a committee of the Dutch Health Council on minimal requirements for Dutch Emergency Departments. He is Chair of the Scientific Research Board of a voluntary International Benchmark project by a consortium of 40 University Medical Centers in the US, UK and Netherlands and Australia, initiated and coordinated by Dr Foster Intelligence, London, UK (www.globalcomparators.com) Dr. Kalkman has been a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology, Journal of Anesthesia (Journal of the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists), Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde (Netherlands Journal of Medicine) and the Netherlands Journal of Anesthesiology. He regularly reviews manuscripts for British Medical Journal, Lancet, Anesthesiology, Anesthesia & Analgesia, British Journal of Anaesthesia and reviews grant applications for Netherlands Foundation for Scientific Research (NWO) Health Technology Assessment program.

Publications – Dr. Kalkman has published more than 200 peer reviewed research papers and several of the randomized controlled trials that he co-designed were published in major general medicine journals (JAMA, Lancet, NEJM). H-index: 40.

PhD students – Dr. Kalkman has mentored 23 MD’s towards a completed doctoral thesis (PhD) and currently supervises 12 doctoral students, many in a combined anestyhesia residency/PhD track that includes a full MSc course in clinical epidemiology.

Invited lectures/Visiting Professor: Cor has lectured extensively, including refresher courses and lectures at ASA, CAA, IARS, NVA (Dutch Society of Anesthesiology) and DAC German Society of Anesthesiology) congresses. He was Visiting Professor in several institutions, among others UC San Francisco, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Mount Sinai, New York, Nara University (Japan), Erlangen (Germany).
