EAF Abstract Competition 2024

These abstracts will be published in an upcoming edition of "Anaesthesia News". The winners will share the cash prize of £500, and receive complimentary entry to EAF 2025 or 2026, as well as a Scottish Quaich.

Targeting and monitoring mean arterial pressure in critical illness: a mixed-methods service evaluation. (Isla MacKay et al, University of Edinburgh, UK)
Isla will receive the cash prize of £250 and complimentary entry to EAF 2025 or 2026.
You are invited to submit an abstract for oral or poster presentation at this year’s Edinburgh Anaesthesia Festival, 21-23 August 2024 @ the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh.
Student registration available for £50 per day, including catering!
The competition includes two awards:
- The Professor Alastair Spence Award includes a cash prize of £500, complimentary entry to EAF 2025 or EAF 2026 and a Scottish Quaich. Two abstracts will be selected for oral presentation on Day 3 of the conference, with the best presentation being awarded the prize. There will be the option for the winning abstract (if eligible) to be published within an EAF-branded advert in an upcoming issue of Anaesthesia News.
- The Best Poster Award has a cash prize of £250 and complimentary entry to EAF 2025 or EAF 2026. Shortlisted abstracts will be invited to present their poster to the delegates, during the EAF. Entrants will need to attend on either Day 1 or 2 of the conference. (If you have a strong preference to a particular day, please advise when submitting your abstract). The winner of the poster prize will be announced on Day 3 of the Conference.

Abstract Submission

Requirements: Abstracts should describe research, case reports or quality improvement work carried out by the authors in anaesthesia, intensive care or pain medicine.
You must ensure that all relevant consent and approval is obtained prior to submitting your abstract.
The Abstract must contain:
- Full name, institution, and contact details of corresponding author (Format: First name, Surname).
- List of all authors (Format: Initial of first name, surname, institution).
- Title, (no more than 20 words).
- The following headings should be used for research or quality improvement work: Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusions.
- The following headings should be used for case reports: Description, Discussion, Acknowledgements and References.
- If required, signed written consent from patients or next of kin (as appropriate) must be obtained prior to submission.
- A maximum of 1 table or figure, and up to 3 references are allowed.
- The total word count of the abstract may not exceed 400 words (not including title, author details, tables, images and references).
Selection Process
Abstract decisions (acceptance or rejection) will be notified by 13 July 2024. Those selected for oral presentation will be notified by 20 July 2024.
Presentation
Presenters (both poster and oral) are expected to pay the "In-person" registration fee and be present at the EAF venue during their assessment day.
Poster presenters must be available to discuss their poster with the judging panel. This will be during the intervals of Day 1 or Day 2 (21 or 22 August 2024) of the EAF (Assessment day / time slot will be advised by 22 July 2024).
Oral presentations for the 'Professor Alastair Spence Award' will be on Day 3 (23th August 2024) in the main auditorium, and will be 7 minutes long with 3 minutes for questions,
Please note
- All judging decisions are final; there are no appeals nor opportunity to discuss decisions made.
- Poster and oral presenters must be registered to attend the EAF by 2 August 2024.
- • Authors will be asked to indicate at time of submission if the abstract contains copyrighted work or work that has been previously published. This will not influence abstract marking. However, if work has been previously published, it may not be possible to be re-published within Anaesthesia News.
